Lionel Tupman, BA, JD

Lionel is a Partner at Tupman & Bloom LLP.  His practice focuses on estate, trust and capacity litigation and civil litigation matters, including professional liability, breach of trust and administrative litigation with a particular focus on matters involving breaches of fiduciary obligations. 


Lionel regularly appears before all levels of Courts in Ontario including the Superior Court of Justice, the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.  He is called to the bar in Ontario,  Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Alberta.  He has appeared as counsel in courts across Canada.


Lionel has experience as counsel in a broad range of litigation matters, including personal injury, medical malpractice, commercial litigation and administrative judicial reviews.  Within the estate and trust litigation field, Lionel has argued numerous leading cases related to Will challenges, testamentary and inter vivos undue influence, resulting trusts, and contested passings of accounts.  


Lionel is a frequent speaker and panelist at Continuing Professional Development seminars for lawyers and other professionals in Ontario and elsewhere.  Lionel has spoken at seminars hosted by the Law Society of Ontario, Osgoode Hall Law School, the University of Victoria Law School, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Bar Association of Prince Edward Island, Osgoode Hall CPD and the Quebec Bar Association.  Lionel also chairs many professional development events, and recently served as a co-chair of the Ontario Bar Association's "Essential Evidence for Estate Litigators" series.


In 2018, Lionel was first ranked in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Guide, and was named a "Leading Lawyer" in the field of Estate and Trust Litigation.  He has been repeatedly listed in the Lexpert Guide since 2018. 


In 2022, Lionel was recognized as a "Lexpert Rising Star:  Leading Lawyers Under 40 in Canada".


Lionel is recognized in the Best Lawyers in Canada Publication in the fields of Estate Litigation and Professional Malpractice (plaintiff).


Lionel served as a member of the Ontario Bar Association Trusts and Estates Executive between 2017 and 2022, ultimately being elected Chair.   Lionel also served as a member of the Ontario Bar Association Elder Law Executive in 2017, and served as Vice Chair of this group in 2018.  Lionel has also served as a Member-at-Large of the Advocates' Society Estate and Trust Practice Group Executive and as a Member-at-Large of the Canadian Bar Association Elder Law Executive.  He served two terms as an elected Toronto Region Councilor for the Ontario Bar Association.


In May 2021, Lionel was appointed to serve as a member of The Advocates' Society 10+ Standing Committee, as well as The Advocates' Society Estate and Trust Practice Group Executive, most recently as Chair. 


Lionel is approved to serve as a Coach with the Law Society of Ontario Coach and Advisor Network for lawyers.


Lionel is Past President and Membership Chair for the University Club of Toronto.

In his spare time

Lionel was nominated as a candidate for provincial parliament in the Niagara Falls Riding in 2014, and he remains active in politics at the provincial and federal levels.  


Lionel is also a former professional bagpiper and saxophonist.  He continues to play music for charity events with his nearly all-lawyer blues band, "Oui B Jamon".


Lionel is the President of the Ontario Society of Phi Delta Phi Legal Honour Society.
